Organize with Activities

Plans and Records are organized by activity. Dayopt has no to-do list or task manager — an activity shows where the time went instead.

Group activities into a category to tell them apart by color and icon. You can open recent Records for one activity from the calendar whenever you need them.

Creating an activity

Create an activity from a timeblock's activity picker, or from the sidebar. It only needs a name — color and icon are not set here.

  • There's no limit on how many you create. Making fine-grained activities doesn't add to your workload
  • Each activity belongs to at most one category. It can't span more than one
  • An activity not in any category is treated as uncategorized

Adding an activity to a timeblock

Each Plan and Record takes exactly one activity. You can't add more than one to the same timeblock.

Your usual length, shown as a hint

In the activity picker, each name carries its usual length on the right — the median of your recorded lengths over the last four weeks, rounded to 5 minutes. It shows up both in the Inspector's activity picker and in the calendar's create panel.

  • An activity with fewer than three records shows nothing
  • Tapping an activity in the sidebar to create a timeblock uses this length by default, falling back to the default length in your settings

The line above the date and time in the Inspector when you plan is a different figure. That one is the ratio between what you planned and what you recorded; this one is the median of the records themselves.

Grouping with categories

A category is a container that groups activities together.

  • Color — choose from a 10-color palette
  • Icon — choose from 48 icons organized by use case
  • An activity inherits its category's color and icon. Without a category, it shows in a neutral color

Categories have no hierarchy. An activity can belong to only one category.

View an activity’s recent Records

Choose Details from the activity list or a timeblock’s activity menu to see its recent recorded time, median Record length, and Records from the last 30 days. See View activity details for how to open a Record in the calendar.

Archiving

Activities and categories you no longer use can be archived instead of deleted.

  • An archived item disappears from the picker. You can't add it to a new timeblock
  • Timeblocks that already used it keep their original name and color after archiving
  • Archiving a category doesn't archive the activities in it — you just can't add new activities to that category

Archived activities and categories can be restored later.

Deleting

Deleting for good shows a confirmation screen with the count of Plans and Records it's attached to. Your time records themselves aren't deleted.

  • Deleting an activity leaves its timeblocks with no activity attached
  • Deleting a category returns its activities to uncategorized
